costa rica in feb

hey folks me and my gal are going to costa Rica for 6 weeks -2 months. i reckon there will be about 3-4000 spent and would like to save where i can.
i'm thinking of getting the amex card for cashback or capitol one which gives ins. i was wondering if i can buy travellers cheques with either of these, well i know i can, but will it go through as a cash withdrawal.or should i pay the money into another acc. then withdraw it from there.
i have the funds available to clear off any balances immediately.
just realised this would be better in the cc section. anyhoos i'll leave it as i'd like to know if anyone has any tips, advice, places to go the general stuff.
managed to get flights for £400-500 rtn from glasgow which sounds reasonable to me any thoughts?
