"Another component of this tradition was that if the man rejects the proposal, he should soften the blow by providing a kiss, one pound currency and a pair of gloves (some later sources say a silk gown)"....Wikipedia ;)

I googled leap year proposal gloves and it said if a man turned down a proposal in a leap year, the customary gift to the lady was a kiss and either a silk dress or a pair of gloves.

** update - PinkJenn beat me too it !!

If only the customary gift was a big fat cheque. It might be worth proposing then! :)

I've just read on a website about leap year traditions that if a man declined a proposal in a leap year he must pay a fine that could range from a kiss to payment for a silk dress or a pair of gloves.dont know how to do the link to the website but its called about.com
