Nice beaches and Croatia don't really go together if by that you mean sand.
We went all over Croatia and the islands. The hotels were comically atrocious (particularly inclusive meals), though it was a good while ago now. The only hotel we stayed in that I could recommend was the Hotel Croatia in Cavtat.
Croatia is great apart from the hotels and their food. The islands are great and Split has an amazing buzz and fantastic history with the city being built in and around Diocletian's palace (though it was also there that we stayed in the worst hotel - hardcore !!!!!! in the lobby on a projection TV with prostitutes sitting with the staff between jobs, handles that fell off, etc. - Marjan I think it was called). Island hopping is great - we did Mljet (tranquil), Hvar (glamour) and Korcula (so many Germans it was like being in the Great Escape).
Hope this helps.0 -
This is the best website for all things Croatian.

Dubrovnik is a must see. There are hotels outside of the city walls but they do tend to be expensive.
As previously stated beaches are mostly rock but better hotels all have pools. It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical0 -
have a look at www.balkanholidays.co.uk for some ideas and information- they do have good prices but i find their website really annoying!0

Pula is in Istria which is a pennisula in North Croatia, very close to Italy.
I have been there and was not overly impressed, the only thing there is the ampthitheater which is stunning, but thats it!
There are some lovely places in Istria - Purec is one, lovely seaside town about an hour further north.
Along the Adriatic there are some lovely seaside towns. If you hire a car try those instead.
Rovinj is probably my favorite, is smaller that Purec but a beautiful little town.
try www.cottagestocastles.com and click on the Croatia link at the bottom, I have used them before.Any spelling mistakes are entirely on purpose to check you're paying attention0
