another A&L mistake

I redeemed my Alliance & Leicester mortgage way back in March & since then there has been a comedy of errors from them, verging on the ridiculous.

Short version:
Because the mortgage redemption didn't go through on the correct date (guess who's fault!) We owed A&L another month's mortgage payment. However, they had included a full year's B&C insurance in the redemption quote (even though we pay monthly?) so they owed us money too. We eventually agreed that we owed them £351. I asked for this amount to be confirmed in writing. It took more than 3 weeks for this letter to arrive, so it took me another 3 weeks to send the payment.........
I happily sent off the cheque for £351 (which had been sat in my savings acct) & hoped that will be the end of it.

Yesterday we receive a letter saying we have overpaid by £351 & A&L have kindly credited the amount straight back into our bank account???!!!

Do I assume that they don't want my money? I've transferred it back into my saving acct & am now going to count the days til I get another letter saying "we are still awaiting your payment of £351" What a bunch of clowns.

Well you have paid them what you owe, I can't see how any reasonable person could expect you to do anything else.

As long as you can afford to keep the money available to pay them on demand, I would just wait and see, I know the interest on £351 isn't much, but better for you to have it :)

    Cheers, Des.

I wouldn't worry about it whilst the moneys in your account, just watch the interest come rolling in. Hopefully they'll forget about it, you deserve it the amount they have messed you around!!

Incidentally I've just got off the phone to Alliance and Leicester Commercial Banking. Last year we changed the signatories and address on the official form that they send you. They've just told me that some of the new signatory info was missing and that they'd written to me in March to explain. Trouble is that I never got the letter and apparently they cant change the correspondence address until the signatory info has been provided...why?!?!

I brought up the question of why they are cashing cheques that the new signatories have signed if they're not yet the account signatories and they didnt know...Thats a bit worrying!

I just hope that they get my current account right that I opened a few days ago...I hadnt had any negative experiences with them then!

Quick update - my OH had a conversation with Alliance & Leicester on Friday afternoon and after lengthy debate they agreed that they are in the wrong & agreed to reduce the £351 owed to £200 as compensation for the trouble they have caused us. Not a bad result - however we asked for this in writing, so we shall wait & see if the letter ever appears??.............

fingers crossed that all goes well with your current acct Murray!
