cpu fan spinning faster after format?

Options
i have recently formatted my computer (gone from vista back to xp)and have found that the fan on the processor runs constantly very fast and inevitably noisy.

before i formatted it used to spin for a couple of seconds on startup then turn itself down so you could hardly hear it,now its getting unbearable.

i have been into bios looking for something that sets it to automatic but nothing stands out.

The pc is a philips mt3700 running xp mce.

any ideas on how to set it back to auto?

• You may have had a motherboard utility loaded, now with the reinstall you need to reload it from the motherboard driver cd?

Nothing else has changed has it?

problem there. its a poxy pc world computer and it didnt come with motherboard driver cd

i did update the bios from manufacturers site as after format as i could not find driver for LAN, i thought this was something to do with it so flashed back and still no difference.

any ideas?
• A bit of a longshot but does anyone use the philips mt3700 pc?

if so any chance of a copy of the motherboard utilities cd?

if you've flashed your BIOS then its probably reset all the settings back to a bsic settings.

I'd guess thats where your problem is. What CPU is your PC AMD or Intel? Or even better - whats your BIOS supplier? eg. Award etc

Have a look for something like 'cool and quiet' in the BIOS settings.

BIOS- phoenix award

intel core 2 6400 @ 2.13

cannot find anything in bios relating to "cool and quiet"?

other things i found :

shutdown temp [disabled]
system temp 27
cpu temp 34
system fan speed 2636
cpu fan speed 4560

thanks for replies can you help some more?
• If you want to try something 3rd party, install speedfan. ( http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php ). If your motherboard can handle this , you should be able to set up maximum and minimum values for the fan speeds ( based on temperture ). Remember to keep an eye on the PC temp values - if the fans run too slow, you will cook your PC .

already tried this dont think my motherboard is supported as it doesnt seem to work,i cannot lower fan speeds.

is 4560 fast for a cpu fan speed? would it be worth buying a different fan with a lower rpm and a "quiet" one?

thanks for any advice.
• in short - yes 4560 is pretty fast - it must be like having a jet engine under your desk!
I've just checked mine now. I've got an asus m-board with a core 2 duo 6600 its running at 45 degrees (a bit warm, but I dont mind) as the system fan is only spinning at 1750 which is reasonable quiet.

Right, a few things you can try (besides fingers crossed!)

Do you have an option to "Load Optimal Defaults" ? Quite often m-board makers recommend you do this after you flash the BIOS.

Some award bios will display extra options if once in the BIOS you press (I think its CTRL F1). You may get a few extra menu options. (always becareful what ou change in the BIOS though).

The BIOS options vary from board to board, but in mine if I goto:-
Power
-->Hardware Monitor
-->Fan Speed Control
I can select between "Duty Cycle Mode" or "Q-Fan Mode" once in qfan I can adjust speed settings.
hope that helps

As to changing your fan - I'm guessing you've got the 'stock' intel standard fan on the chip. Intel fans are fairly quiet - I dont think changing it will bring you any benifits. I've spent £45 on a Heatsink/fan in the past and they've not been noticibly better or quieter than the standard fan I using now.
• Thanks for all replies evilgoose but still no joy

I have loaded "optimal defaults" but no difference.

ctrl f1 does not bring up any hidden menus but you are correct in what you say but maybe not with this bios??

there is no mention of fan/fan speed whatsover in bios except for in pc health status where you can see fan speed but it is greyed out and i unable to change anything as with q cycle there is no mention.

any more ideas? this is getting annoying now i`ve spent 3 evenings on this!!!
