Egg Cards

 BEWARE - I took out an Egg card about 2 years ago and paid the balance off Jan 07 - I actually paid too much and didnt realise until March - so I rang Egg and asked for a refund £118. 25p - this they did but I didnt realise at the time that they actually credited me with £118.75 anyway the bottom line is - if you pay off an Egg card and dont tell them to close the account - they charge you 50 pence a month for keeping it open so after nearly 12 months I have had to pay £5.00 which isnt a lot of money but a nice little earner for the bank - nobody told me that I would be charged to keep my account open

Sounds very unusual. I've had my account at a nil balance for some time and haven't been charged this. Can you perhaps post a line from your statement showing this?

I agree with rbulph - I have had the Egg Credit Card for over a year without any transactions and had a nil balance all the way through. Never had this on Egg Money either.

I love Egg as a Company and am only closing this card because it's not offering any 0% transfers, so want to close and re-open (perhaps) in a year.

Your post states that you were £118.25 in credit and they transferred £118.75 to you. This put your account 50p in debit.
You will have been charged interest on that 50p every month. Egg have a policy of charging a minimum of 50p interest so each month you will have been charged 50p, probably indicated on your statements as a "minimum finance charge"
If you'd had a zero balance you would not have had any charges to pay.

  • Hi DK1,
Does this mean that you had a -50p balance after your refund? If so the charge could be the minimum interest charge lots of CCs seem to charge.
