I have an award ceremony to go to at this hotel in February and not knowing London at all I'd appreciate any local knowledge. If possible I'd like to know what other (cheaper) hotels are in the area and any good places to eat nearby. I'm not sure I'm going to have a lot of time to do the tourist bit but if there are any exhibitions/art galleries nearby I'd appreciate knowing about them. Also how easy is it to get to the main shopping areas.
TIA

If you like curries, there is a very good restaurant called Porte des Indes nearby

Bayswater Road is just around the corner with loads of Lebanese restaurants. Many shops and cafes are open throughout the night.
As for exhibitions, Time Out London or the Sunday Times online will have reviews of what's on. Personally, I really enjoy visiting The Wallace Collection in Manchester Square. They have Titian, Rembrandt etc on display. Most famous for having the Laughing Cavelier. Best of all, it's free and not too crowded.

Forgot to mention, you'll be spoilt for choice if you want to go clothes shopping, Marylebone village is very nearby as are the meccas of Oxford St and Regent St. With the sales on, you might be able to nab a few bargains.0

i went to the Dorchester in the summer, I have always stayed at the Montcalm Hotel Nikko (just google it) Its clean, staff are polite & friendly, you dont get breakfast included though, and its a decent rate- its not far from The Dorchester (basically head out the hotel, straight down the road, which is Great Cumberland Place, across the road, & your on Park Lane already or you could stroll through Hyde Park.) As i say not far at all. As for shopping, Knightsbridge is not far from The Dorchester- you could walk it, but there are always plenty of cabs about! Now im debt free i want to be fat free too!0
