How can I tell if a pineapple is ripe?

Might be posting in the wrong place so please feel free to move it.

I bought a pineapple at the weekend because it was on offer and I fancied it as I havent had fresh pineapple for years. Trouble is, it is mostly green but the label claims that it is ripe - I cannot tell and was wondering if there was a way to find out rather than trying to cut into it.

Help would be appreciated.

I was told that you should be able to pull out one of the inner stalks (the greeen sprouty things on top) easily.t If you can't then its not ripe.
I USED TO BE INDECISIVE BUT NOW I'M NOT SO SURE!

I'll third that. You shouldn't have to tug very hard either.

It smells like a pineapple - one leaf came off but others need a sharp tug. Plus I will have a go at growing a pineapple on my sunny windowsill - if I keep it long enough I might just get some of my own (just like those I saw in Singapore).

I will leave the pineapple until tomorrow and have a go at eating it then.

Thanks one and all for your help.

NB. Must remember to buy a Lakeland Pineapple Corer...

My friend bought one of those corers from Lakeland and complained it just made a mush of her pineapple.
It didn't occur to me, until I'd bought it off her, that she's left-handed and had been turning it counter-clockwise  .

    Works perfectly for me though.....
