Help keyboard and mouse not working

Went to switch on my desktop today and both the USB keyboard and mouse don't work.

A black screen does flash up when I start up and it does say something about the USB ports and no keyboard detected but it doesn't stay on the screen long enough for me to read.

Tried to start in Safe mode but I presume that I can't because the keyboard doesn't work.

I have tried a different keyboard and a different mouse in different ports.

Windows starts OK and I get to the Log on screen but without a working keybaord or mouse I'm stuck.

Any other ideas, please?

sounds like the usb may be disabled in bios or the drivers maybe corrupt. get a couple of usb>ps2 adapters and use them till you find out what's up.

Unplug the keyboard and mouse, then let the PC boot up into windows (or Linux / Solaris / whatever you use!). then plug them back in one a time?
One of my PCs occasionally throws a wobbler on boot like this... did you change/add any hardware recently? I've got a USB hub that works fine but prevents the PC booting when it's plugged in.
  • Thanks for the suggestions but none of the 6 usb ports work. The computer is only 13 months old and we've already had the ethernet port replaced.

Should I take it back to PC World?

the ps2 adapters should work if you have any, you can get them from any computer shop and i wouldn't expect to pay more than a quid for them.
  • We haven't got any PS/2 ports.
