Credit reference agencies and clean up

Hiya

I'm just in the process of ordering my credit reports from the 3 main agencies to check if all info is correct. I noticed that Equifax say they cannot amend the report to say you are discharged unless you send the certificate of discharge that you can get from the court. It goes on to say that I need to send this certificate to my (ex) creditors to update their systems also.

Does anyone know if I have to send the original certificate ? It would take ages to send an original to all 3 agencies AND all the previous creditors - would end up battered

    Hi sweeper,

Depending on when you were discharged your reports may well already have been altered to reflect that. We were discharged in August and I applied for Credit Reports from the three main CRA's in late October, and Equifax and Experian were both marked with our discharge date. Call Credit didn't have any mention of our bankruptcy or any information on us at all so what planet they live on I don't know.

Out of approximately 15 creditors, only one asked for a discharge certificate and that was a store card with less than a couple of hundred pounds on it. The O.R will confirm your discharge and that won't cost you anything; the Court Certificate will cost you £60.

I would wait until you get your reports and take it from there. Where ours needed amending I only included a photocopy of the Bankruptcy Order and an accompanying letter explaining that we'd been discharged after 12 months with no restrictions.

I can post the pro-forma if you'd like. With the one exception, we got letters within a week to a fortnight thanking us for the information and that the records would be updated forthwith. It was all quite straightforard really.

I haven't checked the files again to see whether they have all made the necessary amendments and I guess there's bound to be some follow up work to do.

    Regards

    Thanks for the info Richard

I'll send off for my reports and see what they contain. I already have the clean up process, posted on these boards, stored into my favourites so I will be able to use them if need be.

Do you know whether I can use a cheque from my hubbys account to get these reports or will I have to send postal orders ?

    Thanks

    Hi sweeper,

You should be o.k with a cheque from your O.H but they might wait for them to clear before they send the report. I paid for Experian and Equifax on line (both accept Electron Card:D ) and sent a Postal Order to Call Credit.

If you are wondering whether to pay out for the certificate, then the thread below may be useful.

    Hi fermi,

It's strange that, because out of all the ones that needed correcting, it was only an obscure store card that asked for a discharge certificate. We didn't even have a letter from the O.R confirming our discharge, and all the others were fine with just the Bankruptcy Order.

Thanks to you both for more valuable info ;)

I might as well wait for the notice of discharge from the OR and see where I get with that.

How long does the letter from the OR usually take ? My post goes everywhere except to my address

    Richard:

    It is very odd.

I haven't bothered with the certificates and have had no complaints/problems, but like you have yet to check the records again.

But other people across the various forums seem to hit a brick wall with most creditors if they don't have the full certificate.

It seems that if you can easily afford it, or can get it free via the normal fee exemption, then it would be a good idea to get one anyway. If only for future records.

If you had Automatic Discharge at 12 months then you won't normally get one.
But most OR's will confirm the discharge in writing if you ask.

If you had ED then it seems to take 1-2 weeks.

    Hi sweeper,

You'll only get a notice of discharge with Early Discharge, which is why we didn't have anything; we had to wait for Automatic Discharge.

From what people have said the letter confirming E.D comes quite quickly after the date.

    Hi fermi,

We did end up forking out £120 for ours but that was for a different reason.

When I saw the Certificate it would have been the easiest thing in the world to DIY. The only validation is the Court Stamp, the rest of it is just a couple of paragraphs of standard text.
