Nickelodeon Film Club - Data Protection Warning **RESOLVED**

Options
Folks, BIG privacy problem with the Nick Film Club (operated by National Amusements / Showcase Cinemas). This club gives a discount on film showings, free goodies and a free cinema ticket on your child's birthday.

DO NOT ALLOW YOUR KIDS TO JOIN THIS CLUB WHILE THE CURRENT SYSTEM OF REGISTERING IS IN PLACE - ALL THE DETAILS YOU OR YOUR CHILD ENTERS ARE AVAILABLE FOR EVERYONE TO SEE.

I won't give full details of the problem for fear of giving less well-intentioned people ideas but suffice to say there is a VERY simple way of obtaining ANY child's name, address, e-mail, DOB, mobile number, password, secret question etc - in fact everything entered on the registration form.

I have contacted the Data Protection officer at National Amusements twice over the last week to report this but they haven't even had the decency to reply - something I thought they would have taken more seriously given recent data loss events.

The Privacy Policy indicates there is robust data security in place - take my word for it, there isn't. The site is still accepting registrations in the same insecure way and the adverts are still on TV.

I haven't joined yet - Should I?
Definitely NOT - At least until the registration system is changed.

I've already joined - what can I do?
If you have already clicked the Parental "I Consent" button in the e-mail sent by National Amusements after your child has registered then open that e-mail again, click the confirmation link and this time click the "Decline" button. This will remove your details from their systems - or at least make them unavailable to others.

:j
OK GUYS, IT WOULD APPEAR THEY FINALLY GOT THE MESSAGE. THE REGISTRATION METHOD HAS BEEN CHANGED AND NOW REQUIRES MORE INFORMATION BEFORE DISPLAYING PERSONAL DETAILS.
:T

Not at all, by all means leave your personal data (and that of your children) in full public view but forewarned is forearmed.

What you choose to do with the warning I have given is entirely up to you but I have no intention of letting anyone get hold of my child's personal details.

So Mr Iamthesmartestmanalive, I give you the very simple method of obtaining youngsters' details and all the pervs on the planet descend on the site to see what they can catch? No thanks, I'll pass.

I know of what I speak.

Why would I go to the trouble of highlighting the security issues with this site if it wasn't true? What would I have to gain? I am just a parent concerned with the lack of security regarding kids' personal details and bringing this to the attention of others who may have similar concerns.
