First off check your credit card and bank statements to find the transaction. Either of these is considered as proof of purchase if you are planning to return it for repair etc.

Do not let Matalan fob you off onto the manufacturer. It is their responsibility to repair or replace faulty goods.

Def. check your credit card statements. If you used a card like amex they offer a lot of help and refunds for faulty purchases

Take the bank statement along with the TV to Matalan to get it sorted out then.

Presumably you have a matalan card, in which case they probably recorded the tv purchase against that. In addition, they should have taken your name and address to inform the TV licensing people of the purchase, yet more proof of purchase.
