Capital One Cashback Credit card

Hi,

I applied successfully for my cashback card back in Sept.'07 and had no problems with it. I recently recommended the card to my brother. He received his card with the added bonus of free travel assistance and insurance. I queried this to Capital One and they said he's on MasterCard World and I'm on MasterCard Europe. So my questions are:

1) Is it worth re-applying for this new Capital One cashback card so I get free travel insurance? Also am I allowed to do this?

2) Do I get anything for referring my brother to Capital One?

Thanks in advance.

  • 1) You will have to cancel your current card before reapplying the hassle of this (and the potential loss of some of your cashback) may outwheigh the benefits and you may get rejected for the card despite having been accepted September
    2) You'll get nothing for referring your brother

I can't understand why you got europe. I got my card in Sept 07 and it is a world card too.

According to the Mastercard website, World Mastercard is their new premium brand aimed at the mass affluent sector (people earning £35,000 - £70,000pa). A World Mastercard must have a reward scheme and a standard package of insurance benefits.

So far, Capital One are the only ones issuing these cards in the UK. It's not all extra benefits, their World cashback card has a short interest free period.

As for which card anyone gets, it could have a different scoring system, or it could just be down to whichever version Capital One were promoting at the time. And from what I've read on here, they have a habit of accepting people for a different card to the one they applied for.

I too have a Capital One cashback cc, its a World Mastercard, not Europe. I think Chris2000 is right, Capital One issue any card they are promoting at the time, because I have a World Mastercard version and I am not earning £35-£70k, although I do have a good credit history.

I have a World one, but the travel insurance only applies if you purchase the holiday on your card and comes with conditions. Also, for the cost of travel insurance (I only paid £12 recently to go to Australia), compared to the cashback available, is it really worth it? You could take out a year's travel insurance for £30 anyway. :)

I bought my holiday on my card, but I still got my own travel insurance as the World one didn't cover what I needed!

I don't have the world card, because i applied before they released this version, mine is the standard cashback card. Its just the way things go.
With the world card you have less time to pay your balance off before being charged interest, whereas with the standard one its up to 56 days interest free.

How do I tell if mine is the "World" version? I quite like the free CDW access policy that comes with the travel assistance.

It has a grey strip along the bottom of the card with 'WORLD' in capitals directly below the Mastercard logo.

My brother is a student(21) and yet to have his 1st 'proper' full time job so I think what Chris2000 is wrong in this case.
Again anything stopping me re-applying to CaptialOne for this card?

It could be negative for your credit rating but only if you've been making other applications as well.

It has a shorter guarantee period.

There is no guarantee with cap one that they will send you the card that you want.
If fact they have a reputation for sending out a different card to the one applied for.
So you will get what they want to give you, not necessarily what you applied for.
Of course you could ring them up and insist on getting the specific card.
