in Credit cards
I'm new here, sorry if this is in the wrong place. I wanted to buy some new clothes so I decided to try https://www.next.co.uk - Next Directory. The choice of items was wide and I liked a few things, so I bought some and set up an account. I've never shopped with Next before. As I was filling in the details I suddenly became aware that Next don't do transactions like Amazon or any other store do: they don't debit your card, YOU have to do it manually via online banking. I found this a bit odd. But I did it anyway. Then when reading the help section on Account Information, I came across this paragraph:
FLEXIBLE ACCOUNT INFORMATION
I understand that a NEXT Directory Flexible Account will be opened for me and that there will be a £3.50 charge for the NEXT Directory which will be invoiced later.
I understand that a card may be issued to me to allow me to use my Account in store to return, exchange or purchase. (Store transactions will be charged to your account normally within 1 day of purchase and purchases from the Next Directory will be charged 16 days after the goods are despatched.)
The NEXT Directory Flexible Account gives you instant credit so you can start ordering immediately. You will have a 14 day approval period after you receive your goods and a further one calendar month Interest Free period before you need to settle your account. You will receive a monthly statement giving full details of your transactions. There will be no service charge if you settle the account in full. There is a maximum monthly service charge of 1.91% variable (APR 24.99%) added to your account when a balance is carried forward to the next month. We accept all major credit and debit cards (excluding Switch) including Visa, MasterCard, Next Gold card or Timecard. Alternatively you can pay by cheque (payable to Next).
You will receive a statement every month, showing an up-to-date balance after any further purchases, payments and returns.
Now will someone please tell me what the hell all this means! I have NEVER had a credit card, store card, in my life and I've never got into debt. But this seems to show that I have inadvertantly signed up to a Next store card or something. How do these things work? What kind of card is it? Do I have to repay the credit on it? Or can I just give it back and/or not use it? I've paid the amount in full on the same day of the purchase. All I wanted was to buy some damn clothes, not sign my soul away to the devil! I should point out that during the registration progress there were two options which had asterisks near them to denote they HAD to be selected before I could proceed. I think one of them basically signed me up for a Next Directory Flexible account, which seems to include this card. God I am so lost here! I just don't wanna end up with a damn card I don't want that I owe money on! I don't even know if I'll be shopping at Next again :S

yes I got caught on this one too. If you thought you were just going to get a catalogue free in the post and order and pay for some things you order you are wrong despite what you were told or lead to believe.
You will get a bill for 3.50 for 'ordering' (**********'s) the catalogue and its an account not something you just order from. I suggest you just pay the 3.50 and send an e-mail telling them to close the 'account'
its very sneakyif i had known then what i know now0 -
My OH is an avid next on line shopper and I left it to him to sort this as I cant be bothered with sorting returns etc.
Anyhow after the "next" man seeming to be delivering at our house several times a week I decided to investigate as he didnt seem to know how much if any interest he was paying.
I discovered he owed approx £400 and that EVERY delivery was costing £3.50 alone.
Administration costs (whatever they may be) were also running at approx. £7 a month!!
I was none too happy as the payments for this come out of our joint finances.
I transferred what was owed onto a 0% credit card and said if he wanted to order any more stuff, to have it delivered to the shop (which is free) and to pay for things as he went along.
He wasnt too happy with this but has stuck to it and hopefully in 6 months it will all be paid for IF he doesnt decide to have another spending spree!Make £10 a Day Feb .....£75.... March... £65......April...£90.....May £20.....June £35.......July £600 -
You do not get a store card for at least 6 months after ordering for the first time. When you order for the first time you will get a statement 14-21 days after. Pay it online with a credit card or via telephone banking and you will be charged no interest if you pay in full by the payment date. If you have the order delivered to the store instead of the house you save £3.50 delivery fee. I love the Next Directory. I have never been charged for a directory - it has always been refunded automatically. I always pay in full every month and my credit limit has increased. Can only be a good thing for your credit score.0

I use next directory quite a lot and have only had one wee problem where I didn't pay off the amount in full (was sending in vouchers to clear the balance and the amount was 35.99 - only sent in £35 thinking I would pay the £0.99 on my next statement) - they charged me a standard fee for not paying the amount in full. However, I called them, explained my error and they kindly refunded the charge - I say kindly as the woman I spoke to did point out that it was in writing when I signed up to the account and I missed it - which is true!!!
I use them all the time and have had no trouble at all with paying, returns, delivery etc. :j0 -
i have a next directory account and love it, you can even use the card at the next clearence stores, which means great bargins,
it is easy to start to spend loads on the card as its just there!!!
shouting to be used!
the credit limit is good , it started at 800 then jumped to 3600 , never wanna spend that much though, they never used to do direct debit, but since they do it now its much better for paying off quicker!
im all for the next card, although i have heard its hard to open a nextaccount, has anyone had any problems being refused?0 -

Hiya, I don't think its that hard... I've been refused for a catalogue from Littlewoods and Great Universal (same company I believe), can't seem to get a credit card or River Island store card, but next approved me for a Next Directory account. They only gave me a £146 (?) strange amount, credit limit, but I'm assuming this will only improve when I pay on time.
I'm greatful that they did this as I wont spend to much, and somebody has finally given me a chance lol..
Doesn't seem too hard, but I might have just been lucky.
Thanx

i've had a next directory for abuot 6 months and never recived a store card
from what i understand its 3.50 delivery for every order - but they dont charge extra if they have to send things separate......least i've never been charged any extra
its handy to have but i normally wait til the sale starts then order online rather than going to the shop and paying cash but im wary not to go too high that i cant pay it in the one go when i get the bill in0 -
best thing to do is do a search on this site for next and you will find loads of codes to use to enter so you get free delivery. I use these all the times0

POPPY, work out the date you first got an account with next and it was on my 7th statement i was given the choice to get a card, hope yours arrives shortly, its brill for the sales in store!:rotfl:0 -
IMHO Next accounts are very good if you manage them correctly. I only tend to use mine now in order to order online during their sales and repay the balance in full.
It is so easy to run a huge debt up, as many of you have said, they give big credit limits (mine is also £3600), charge delivery of £3.50ish if you have the goods delivered to home, and if you do not pay the balance in full, you are charged something like 26.4% APR.Its nice to be important but more important to be nice!0
