Would you recommend iinstalling WGA?

One for you techies......
Would you recommend installing the latest WGA XP update for windows .
The reason I ask is that I've heard of a few cases of people using what they thought was a genuine copy of XP only to have this latest update tell them otherwise,! and so prevent them receiving any other security updates.
As far as I'm concerned my PC came with a genuine copy of XP installed although I have no proof!, I have been receiving updates regularly for the past several years with no problems, but I am concerned that if I install the WGA update maybe something might show up and I will therefore be denied any future updates. Would I be better off" playing safe" and leaving things as they are? or is it a case of having to install it to keep the security up to date?
Technical opinions please.

  • I would still do the updates, but bookmark this page, just in case it goes belly up, though I wouldn't think it will

Do you have a COA sticker on the PC?

If so don't worry, because if it goes wrong phone up Microsoft and they will sort it for you.
  • Can you download the updates without installing WGA? If so I wouldn't bother. If not, you don't have a lot of choice.

If all you want are security updates I don't believe there's any reason why you shouldn't just "untick" the WGA download and then "tick" the "don't remind me about this update again" box.

However, if you want other updates to MS Office, etc, then, if the system behaves the same as it did about a year ago, you will be forced to run WGA before you can go any further.

Most of my PCs underwent WGA without a problem, but I had to decline it on an old laptop, because I didn't install XP on it and so couldn't be 100% sure it would pass. It behaves fine and receives security updates with no problems.

At the moment I'm on auto update and I'm prompted to install the latest updates, of which the latest is WGA , the question is whether the next set of updates will be allowed and how do I know if WGA isn't being installed when I install these?

Where do you "tick and untick" the WGA download box as I'm on auto update? Do you have to go on their website to select this option?
