Well its because car speedo's are always wrong by about +/- 10%
Since these posting my original query I looked at Tom Tom One Xl and that almost does what I want - it can display speed/road limit on the bottom right of the unit for examp 65/70 when you are doing 65 on a motorway - now it seems to me it must be possible for the init to compare those two numbers and bleep if the actual speed exceeds the road speed limit!
Also in the menu you can set a speed (default is 55mph (US market?) to use - and the unit warns you if you exceed that.
I also took a look at panasonic model that had an option you could turn on to warn if exceeding the speed limit of the road. But its seriuolsy expensive.

Wow are you guys assuming that you get a true speed reading on your Sat Nav?
The Garmin 510 in our works van showed a top speed of some 270 mph. I think I would be careful kids!.....0 -
It could have been taken on a light aircraft to get those readings though0
