is it worth buying warranty
Options
My OH is spending £12000 on a 5 year old audi and the garage will only give a month's warranty and suggest we purchase our own off the internet. We took the car to a VW/audi specialist who found an oil leak which the original garage has fixed using an audi mechanic and will provide us with paperwork - apart from that our garage said it was a good buy. I understand warranty is about £300 a year so do you think it's worth buying or not. I think a month's warranty on a £12000 car is outragsous but my OH says it's pretty standard. What do you think. Depends on your balance of risk and peace of mind. Google car warranty. I think one of the largest providers is Warranty Direct and you can select levels of cover. The man without a signature.0

I guess these are the risks you take when you buy at this bit of the market. Although if you don't have enough money reserved to afford any possible repairs or servicing I would wonder why you were so eager to splash out £12k when much cheaper cars are around, and you could even buy new at this price range and get the MFR's warranty.
Depends what the warranty would cover you for as well. For example, a clutch might not be covered as it's a wear and tear item, but it would cost a bit to replace.
I wouldn't bother personally, just set a grand aside for any unexpected emergencies.0 -
you need to look closely at what is and isnt covered.
£300 a year isnt a lot compared to what repairs on an audi could cost but not if all the expensive stuff isnt covered!0 -
forget warranty direct....i have been paying them for both mine and my wife's cars since september 2007 (£25 /month each car)....took the wife's car for service last week (always dealer service to keep the car value) and they said there is oil leak which they will need to investigate further ...warranty direct did not want to know as they said any thing to do with oil is not covered (i am on their top policy-called extra care)....what these idiots think the engine could leak...orange juice?..claims dep. will not budge...i spoke to the guy who sold me the policies (he nearly kissed my a**se to sell me the policies) and he was not interested as claims are not his buisness:mad: !!! needless to say i cancelled both policies immediately. in a sense i am lucky i found about these cowboys only after 4 months of policy start...it could have been alot worse if i have been paying them for years.0

Thanks for all your honest replies. I'm not surprised warranty people try to wriggle out of paying up - don't they all. It's just another form of insurance and I'm afraid my opinion of them is the lowest of the low - oh along with solicitors and estate agents. They're all alright when it comes to touting for your business and promising you the earth - but you dare to actually claim anything and you're stuffed. My OH had a previous car stolen - the value was only about £1000 but it took 18 months of them trying to wriggle out of it until eventually I'd had enough and wrote directly to the Chief Executive and got a cheque the next day. I'm not saying this to blow my own trumpet but just to show how dishonest most of them are. We have an outstanding buildings insurance claim from May of last year with Abbey - gone are the days where they trusted you and told you to get 3 quotes and then pay the cheapest - they sub-contract to 3 different firms who between you manage to !!!! it up and make 3 different trips to assess the damage and then lose all the paperwork. Please excuse my rant0
