corgi a must?

I have bought a new house which has only storage heaters. I am going to get gas central heating installed, i have been quoted £3800 for a boiler 6 radiators a towel rail and a line to the fire in case we want to put in a gas fire all my quotes have been from corgi registered people.
a workmate of mine has gone through his college and has been on an insurance course for plumbing he is also well experienced in the work. he is not corgi registered but wopuld do the work for £2000 as a friend. As you can imagine I am keen to give him the go-ahead but don't know what the legal or insurance implications are. can i get it corgi checked after is this required? any advice will be much appreciated.

The short answer is - it is illegal for your workmate to do the work for you.

I would only partially agree with that.

If you read the restrictions they are on gas appliances ie the boiler not the heating system. I think that your mate could do all the plumbing work, radiators etc even siting the boiler BUT he cannot make the final gas connection to the main.

It would be a lot cheaper for you to get him to do the work and then get a corgi guy in to make the connection.

    However
[1]he won't be able to test the system without the connection [2]I wouldn't be at all surprised if heating engineers got funny about just making the connection - simply on the principle that they didn't get to rip you off on the rest of the system

    yes
I agree wth Haggy, you can get your friend to Install everything but the gas pipe and gas pipe connections.

A corgi registered plumber or heating engineer with valid certificate must Install and hook up the gas pipe then test your system for you.

You or your friend would get a very hefty fine even put to prison if you decide to do this yourselfs.

    Don't take the chance !

Thanks. I take it every ones pretty sure its ok to pu everything but the gas line in. If you think heating engineers would not be keen to put the line in because they didn't get the other work could i just go to my chosen gas supplier to do this or would he charge me a fortune?
