corgi a must?
I have bought a new house which has only storage heaters. I am going to get gas central heating installed, i have been quoted £3800 for a boiler 6 radiators a towel rail and a line to the fire in case we want to put in a gas fire all my quotes have been from corgi registered people.
a workmate of mine has gone through his college and has been on an insurance course for plumbing he is also well experienced in the work. he is not corgi registered but wopuld do the work for £2000 as a friend. As you can imagine I am keen to give him the go-ahead but don't know what the legal or insurance implications are. can i get it corgi checked after is this required? any advice will be much appreciated.

I think when working out the savings it might be worth considering the cost of long wooden boxes, with brass handles.
A corgi certificate means that they have met the standards needed to install or do work upon gas appliences in the home.
Also it might be worth considering the cost of parking out side a prision to visit your friend, as it's a criminal offence to 'play' with gas with out a corgi certifcate.
The corgi certificate cost a plumber alot of money, which is why they charge enuf to cover this investment.
I hope you make the correct decision your yourself and your family.

You can install the entire system apart from connecting the gas to the boiler.
The corgi engineer will then conduct a presure test to make sure that there is no gas leak(s)
British gas etc will normally not be intested in doing a job like this as it's too small for them, but a local chappy will see it as a 'cash in hand' sort of job.
Remember to use plenty of PTFE tape, lol

There used to be a clause that states that installing gas applience was not illegal if done by the house owner. But this has probably been receeded due to safety.
NB.2 Look at buying a condensing boiler, as these are around 35% more efficient than a normal boiler, from April nxt year they become a legal obligation. A cheaper boiler may cost you more in the long run if they r not as eficient.
