I purchased some Sale trousers in M&S today and they told me no refunds allowed against sale items. Is this leagal? I tried them on so i won't need a refund but I thought they had to refund if they don't fit. Does this mean they will exchange or give a credit note? Any ideas? thanks
They were cheap£3, £5, £1 !!

They do not have to refund/ repair/ exchange unless the item is faulty. The signs state this.Gone ... or have I?0

I wish people would read the info on the back of reciepts, saves alot of bother!
Companies dont have to accept refunds. The only time its illegal is if youre trousers had a fault. They will probably offer you a gift voucher for the amount of the trousers, or an exchange at best.0 -
M&S have got clear signs up stating that they will not refund/exchange items bought in the clearance (£1/£2/£5 stuff) if you change your mind or damage the items after purchase.
I assume this is so that they can fulfill the aim of totally clearing the stock.
Managed to get some really good bargains in this sale in Preston at the weekend and am going to check out Deepdale Retail Park tonight!0 -

Good luck! I just thought many years ago when I worked in a shop it was illegal to put up such signs! Probably my memory. Good luck with the bargains all!0 -
Sale items or not your statutory rights are unaffected. If the item turns out to be faulty you can get a refund.0

I noticed the same thing at Debenhams but only after i'd bought reduced stuff. They must be allowed to do it but I don't thinks it's very fair if they shut the changing rooms at sale time and then if they don't fit you can't take em back!0

Both M&S and Debs will take 'normal' sales stuff back it's when it's more than 50% off (like 70% off in Debs or reduced to silly prices in M&S) that they won't and when they get to this stage the fitting rooms are open so it's up to us to try them on!
If you think you are too small to make a difference, try getting in bed with a mosquito!

Yes but Debenhams don't advertise this in big writing. It's on the receipt (so you only know after your purchase) or at the till in small writing. At least M&S only do this when they are selling off things dirt cheap.0

how do you know whether you can return or not?
I bough a pair f trousers on friday evening at meadowhall. Not dirt cheap - £12. Don't think the signs were up then but couldn't guarantee it as was shopping with my son and had my hands full!
Sheffield store had bigger reductions on Saturday and definitely had signs up. Is there any way you can tell from the receipt?0
