I'm also a BAP, I do take a list with me, for things that are definately needed, but otherwise, my meals are decided by what's on offer or in the reduced section:TComping again - wins so far : 2 V festival tix, 2 NFL tix, 6 bottles of wine, personalised hand soap, Aussie miracle conditioner

I've usually got a darn good idea of what's actually in my freezer/fridge. Then when I go to ASDA, first stop is the 'whoopsie shelves' and that's when I start to mentally meal plan. I've recently started getting even the very large pizzas that won't fit in my oven - BUT I portion them up by cutting into quarters or sixths and then re-wrapping with clingfilm before freezing. Large trays of diced turkey thigh get split into 2 usable amounts and the same with trays of minced beef - the 2lb trays are good value for money - 4 half pound packages from those (there's usually only 2 of us here - but often a couple of my adult kids drop by with my dgkids). I'll buy the packs of fresh fish that get reduced after around 6.00pm and they go in the freezer as well - OH loves most fish! The grandkids love the cheapie packet noodles from ASDA.
When I see the 'stew-packs' in ASDA (not always available in our store) then that means that stews/casseroles are on the menu or being cooked to be frozen!
So, for me at least, the secret is a basic meal-plan BUT with room for some flexibility when confronted by 'not-to-be-missed' bargains!:T0
