I am getting back into my 'shopping for my menu' method.
I plan our meals for the week and write my shopping list around that. I may not pick up any bargains but for me this works better as I wouldn't know when to stop. So in a way I do save. IYSWIM

yeah i could never make a list for menu planning then stick to buying just that when i go shopping-that would mean id have to pass by all the bargains.instead i buy the bargains and meal plan as i go along-never more than a few days at a time as i never know who is gonna be in,out or working.i try to have at least 3 days a week we all sit down together to eat and the others kids-well 17 and 20 ,fend for themselves
im trying to empty freezer at the minute so we are at pot luck most nights lol

I usually have in stock
Herbs/spices, gravy, mince, Chicken, Potatoes, Rice, Pasta, beans, tin toms, tuna....I find I can make a whoe range of meals with just those. I then buy whatever is on offer and fit these in somewhere in the week.
Bulk buy hehe I have a special secret hiding place where I currently have stored, 2x160 boxes of t-bags, 4xbran flakes, 4xnesquick cereal, 4x26walkers crisps.....etc.etc.
I keep these hidden and bring out 1 at a time that way everyone thinks thats all left and doesn't scoff it all hehe.

I'm another BAP
I've tried meal planning but failed miserably either because I didn't fancy cooking what was planned or someone else didn't fancy eating it, or Mr T failed to deliver everything I ordered!
What I do need to do more of though is write down the recipes or make a note where I spotted them (no good relying on mental notes lol) of any meals I've specifically bought ingredients for otherwise I end up thinking what on earth did I buy that for
I also tend to stock up when stuff is on offer too, in fact too much at times so maybe I should have a look at this storecupboard challenge I often see mentioned so I can start using some of it up“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -

At least i'm not alone in hiding food.
Its so annoying when you budget, plan and stock up on bargains then OH and the kids think that Mum must have won the Lottery and eat everything in sight
Kind of defeats the whole purpose of doing all the O/S stuff like the Grocery challenge etc
I've been threatening to get a lock on the understairs cupboard which is handily enough in the kitchen.
Have a Joiner coming to lay wooden floors very soon and i'm definately going to get him to put a lock on it.How does a brown cow give white milk, when it only eats green grass?0 -
If I have goodies in that I don't want to get eaten then I hide them in the veg tray in the bottom of the fridge.
No one EVER goes in there when they're looking for munchies!0 -
I'm also a BAP!
I have a good stock of basic products at home but I never decide what I'm cooking in advance, even if I'm cooking for friends. I will go to the shops, see what is good and/or on special offer and that is what we will have.Mortgage Free as of 03/07/2017 :beer:0 -
Another BAP here.
My meal planning starts at the bargain bin in ASDA, and then only if the contents generate what I call a "Ready Steady Cook" moment!
Living alone, hiding food is not an option.
However, sometimes I seem to take a hybrid approach: for example, I've found a Tagliatelle Carbonara recipe, which I fancy having a go at (and then eating). However, I will probably wait until I find the ham or cream in the bargain bin before actually doing it!The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -
I've just found it so much easier, being a BAP that is, lol.
Along with other reasons, the menu planning just seemed a bit restrictive too and I don't like being told what to do . . . even by myself apparently :rotfl:0
