Freezing HSBC card
I froze my card thinking that this would stop use at ATM's and any website and Point of Sale purchases.
However, it also stopped a recurring monthly payment.
On going into the app, I couldn't see any options to fine tune the freeze, there was only one choice.
Have I missed something in the app that would give greater control?

Sounds like this shouldn't happen so worth raising with HSBC if it was definitely the freezing that prevented the transaction, as opposed to lack of funds, etc:
Freezing your card won’t affect:
Direct Debits and standing orders
Digital wallet transactions and recurring payments

The HSBC website seems to say freezing the card shouldn't stop recurring payments...
https://www.hsbc.co.uk/help/card-support/block-unblock/
Freezing your card will affect:
Most contactless and online card payments.
Cash machine services and withdrawals
Please note, we can’t guarantee we’ll be able to freeze all transactions and you’ll still be liable for any that do go through
Freezing your card won’t affect:
Direct Debits and standing orders
Digital wallet transactions and recurring payments
Transactions on any supplementary cards

I forget the terminology, but came across a form of recurring payments maybe 10 years ago.
That form of recurring payment, unlike a direct debit, could not be stopped by the bank customer themself.
Are there different types of recurring payments?

Wouldnt it depend how the merchant involved processes it?

I believe the term you're looking for is Continuous Payment Authorities, which do differ from direct debits, but if HSBC state that freezing doesn't affect 'recurring payments' then that should be what they're referring to - as above, it sounds like you need to contact them to establish what happened and why…

I'm travelling at the moment, so I'll look into this further when I get back.

Any further transactions attempting to use the card number would generally seek authorisation to guarantee payment. Sounds like your recurring monthly payment sought payment authorisation and it was declined
