Spending control

I struggle with spending self control when drinking on a night out and am looking for ways to curb my spending.
I’ve two accounts, one current account and one credit card account. I don’t use a physical card with either but my credit card is on Apple Pay so I use that when spending. My credit card is with hsbc and I cannot see any options with them to put a spending limit for 24 hours on the card for example. Has anyone any advice for limiting night out spending? Thanks

Get a basic account with no overdraft facility and a debit card. Transfer only the amount you want to spend.

I’m not sure that will help with control as the option would still be there halfway through a night out to transfer more money?

Remove it feom apple pay and don't take the card out with you.

Alternatively, If you have no self control then don't go out then.

This answer might be old school but it has worked for people on a budget.

    Cash!

Take cash out before the night out, then don't take your cards with you on the night out. You can only spend what you have in cash. Does assume you can get home by walking or using some kind of travel card.

I suppose it also means removing your cards from Apple pay before the night out then adding them back on after the night out.

  • This is a tip for managing your drinking but will help to manage your spending too. After every alcoholic drink, drink a glass of water. This will rehydrate you and slow down your drinking.

I’m finding a lot of places aren’t taking cash anymore, sad but true, especially in cities.

Not going out at all is an amazing and thoughtful idea, thanks, although may lead to other problems.

you can go out without drinking alcohol. I used to drink j20 because I didn't like being drunk. There are comments made that you should have a drink but just ignore them.

The only way I can see is to get a second current account and just take that debit card with you. If you have your phone then no matter what you'll do you'll always be able to reinstall the apps and add the cards to the wallet.

I would suggest you maybe speak to a therapist. I am not saying that in some glib ways but genuinely it will work out far cheaper in the long run to help you get the impulse control sorted than trying to put in place systems to control that you will always be able to bypass.

    Hi

As you are serious about cutting back on spending when you are out - take cash only - remove apple pay (uplaod it next day). It may not work everytime, but where there is a weill, there is indeed a way.

    Good look, mate.
