Anyone know the internal workings of ATM machines?

Recently I asked an ATM to withdraw me £150 from my current account. The wad of money appeared and somehow I only had one £20 note in my hand, the other £130 disappeared into the machine.

I was upset.

I thought maybe next customer will get a bonus of my money, so withdrew a further single note. That alone appeared and I could see money looking down into the slot, would that have been my £130?

Contacted my bank who in turn contacted the ATM provider who say they have checked and nothing wrong happened so I have lost my £130.

My question is to an ATM expert is where did my failed to take money actually go?

Is lying in the bottom of ATM..

Could not talk to machine operator, One Note, the number on machine gets automated voice which ends up you have to phone your own bank, Nationwide, who were extremely helpful.

Normal procedure is that the ATM will have logged the fact that the machine has retained notes on a particular transaction and this will be re-credited to the card account after 24-48 hours.

Any enquiry/complaint should be addressed to your card issuer, as the OP has done.

Might be relevant, was this an ATM at a bank/supermarket or a standalone in a cornershop?

The ATM owner can't have physically checked the machine yet as it will be out of balance when the notes it contains are counted. While your missing money is very unlikely to be "lying in the bottom of the ATM" I would expect it to be in a rejects bin rather than having been returned to the cash cartridges. You need to keep on at your card issuer, making a formal complaint if they don't get it sorted for you.

ATM is on the outside of a Morrisons supermarket.

Yes I will be getting back to Nationwide. This reject bin do they know if anything in it without physically looking?

Not sure if this will help but I forgot to take the money from the machine one night and thought someone would have taken it though I returned super quick.

The machine reabsorbed the notes , I went to the bank to say what happened and the cash was returned a week or so later.

In your case it's connecting with the ATM owners. If they don't fill you with confidence go via the card issuer which you have done.

Internal workings? I have some experience.

My knowledge may be out of date.

In my day you could not tell whether there was anything in the 'bin' box ie the one where the rejected, torn, etc notes end up, before opening it . I have also seen notes jammed in the mechanism of the machine or places where you would not think to look.

Link machines needed to be balanced at least once a fortnight. Whether this is done properly or the figures are manipulated because the staff were not paid to work longer than contracted hours - well you can decide that.

The procedure is that you phone up your bank to raise a dispute - not the ATM operator.

They are/were supposed to refund you within 24 hours (business hours) with a proviso that if the machine was found to have balanced then they could re-debit your account.

Last para. yes N'wide did that but One Note them there was nothing amiss with the transaction so NW took the £130 back.

So my question who got my £130. My concern is it is still in machine and no one looked for it.
