My car is driving well, just an ordinary saloon nissan note , just curious on the scrappage value nowadays. costs insurance and roadtax adds up to half the value of the car. been told by the mechanic "there's still 4 years left in it" mileage 84k

Keep the car and it might well provide you many more years service.

Scrap value is likely next to nothing (£200?). As a used car to trade it might be £50. For a private sale, depending on length of MoT, maybe £500 to £1k

We've got a Nissan Note too. 09 plate. Still going strong, recently passed its MoT with no problems. 78.6K miles.

  • it might be most valuable as a trade-in, I had a little old car and when a local dealership advertised a minimum trade-in offer of £XXX I took my car along. Obviously they didn't want it so offered me more than it was worth to NOT trade it in; I then sold it privately.

Whilst running costs as a proportion of the value of an older car might seem high there will still be running costs with a new car. My car is 24 years old, with 80k on the clock. It passed MOT for 6 years on the run now with no problems. Pretty reliable and repairs that do crop up are cheap compared to a new model. When a light bulb goes I can replace it myself, whereas a friend had to take their sooper dooper modern car to the garage who had to dismantle it to get to the offending light bulb. Parts might be reasonable but labour is the big cost on any problem. If your car is running OK then just look at the overall annual cost of having wheels and think about the huge depreciation on a new car as soon as you drive it off the forecourt.

If it is a rare one that doesn't have severe water leaks, keep it.

The e11 Note is a fantastic car, and you will never find anything newer that can even come close to it in terms of reliability, practicality & comfort for up to 5 adults plus luggage.

I ran an 08 plate auto for over 10 years, and apart from going through front springs and headlight bulbs like an elephant goes through sticky buns it only ever needed oil & filters (and tyres, the O.E. Continentals didn't used to last 5 minutes, but I discovered that ditchfinders wore a lot better)

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

On the other hand crash protection/prevention has moved on a lot in almost 2 decades.

The value of the car is irrelevant to those costs. They will be the same regardless of car and just because you've paid a lot of money from a brand new car so the costs are a lower percentage doesn't make it any better.

Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
