It sounds as if your son in law has some mental health problems, possibly depression. He likely knows the problems but doesn't know where to begin to resolve them or how to ask for help.

Can your daughter persuade him to see his GP?

Alternatively there is a charity called Families Anonymous who have meetings to support the friends and family of addictive loved ones. They won't tell you what to do but it may help to speak to other people in similar positions. There may be a local meeting near you and there is an online forum,

Like a previous poster - a lot of assumptions in this post.

Maybe he is depressed, or maybe he is just fed up living with his in laws being there all the time. I used to struggle with mine when they just came over for a few days.

He drinks 10 bottles of wine a week. For sure it is more than is good for his health, and generally not a good habit, but it does not mean he is addicted to alcohol. It will seem a lot to someone who does not drink much, but your typical 'proper' alcoholic will be drinking probably three times that much. These services like Families Anonymous, or similar, tend to be geared towards people with a lot more issues with alcohol and who are causing real chaos for themselves and their families.

Yes a lot of assumptions are being made. But sometimes going to a meeting like Families Anonymous can help to put things into perspective. It's not a Service it's a charity comprised of ordinary people with an addict of any kind who is a family member or friend. It's not for the addict. It's a support group for family and friends.

No he probably isn't addicted yet but he doesn't seem to be able to look at the problems he's causing from a sensible point of view. Maybe it's not the alcohol causing the issue, maybe it's an addiction to spending.

And yes most addicts do cause a lot more harm and chaos to their families than this son in law appears to be doing. However it won't harm anything for the OP or her daughter to go to an FA meeting or read the literature. It may give them some insight into how others have dealt with similar problems and some ideas on how to deal with it themselves.

FA Meetings are just a group of ordinary individuals who have a loved one causing problems to the rest of the family. It's very low key but can really help family members when they are at the end of their tether.
