Dual Fuel Hobs
With all the debate going on this morning about standing charges, there was a article on the BBC webpage and it showed a picture of what looked like a hob with two convection rings and two gas rings, something I have never seen before.
My question is are such hobs available in the UK and what are the benefits of them?

Readily available

Why would you want one? Ever tried to stir fry in a flat bottomed-wok on an induction hob?
Handy having gas hob for charring veg like peppers.
Because they look really cool set into the granite worktop of your kitchen island.

plus you've got some redundancy in the event of a disruption to gas or elec supply. even more so if you are running of bottled gas rather than mains

Also, there are so called 'domino' hobs - with 1-2 rings/burners each.

Not a very MSE price just for a hob !

It was literally the first (sponsored) returned entry to a Google search. I haven't even looked at the price.
There seem to be lots of models available.

I would have thought the pictured hob would be ideal for anybody big ok wok cooking - you can use a proper round bottomed wok. With induction you'd need a flat bottomed wok, which just isn't the same.

Well in an ideal kitchen setup I'd have one of these
Not quite the monstrous scary jobs they have in the kitchens of any Chinatown but damn pretty (and only a smidge over a grand).

We've been looking at range cookers, and we did see one in Currys that had 2 induction hobs alongside 4 gas rings. We've decided to go gas hobs only but was definitely a thought for a second. I think we'd go one way or the other though.

Can I ask why you discarded using induction? Simply because of the design of the range?
I know plenty of gas hob users (including a few professionals) who have happily converted to induction (with the wok proviso above) after initially being sceptical of their efficacy. The benefits are well documented.
Downsides? You can't use that set of pretty copper pans or aluminium anything.

Most of our pans will work on induction, apart from the wok which we use a lot, so wasn't a big issue. I don't think there was much in which we preferred, but there was £hundreds difference in price of buying the cooker. The dual fuel range cooker we've decided on is costing £1,500, the induction one we liked was £2,400. The one the OH loved was £3,500. We also won't need a huge amount of works on the electrics for the one we are getting, whereas we'd need a new circuit for the induction one. We are also better prepared if there is a power cut (apparently).
