Eon and Gas Smart Meters

Hi - I have been fighting with Eon since I had a gas smart meter fitted which appeared to almost triple my gas bills. Due to the way they bill (multiple debits and credits) I have never been able to figure out whether bills are correct and no-one could give me a clear explanation.

I went through Ombudsman who dismissed my complaint - because I didn't respond on time, meter was sent for testing, passed the test but was never re-fitted and left with temporary meter.

Fast forward and sold the property - sent final meter readings, paid final bill (nearly £1000 in debt) and thought I'd heard last of it. Oh no - two months later got another (!) final bill for £650 and despite multiple attempts to understand why, being referred to 2 debt agencies without warning and now anther complaint sent to eon - waiting to hear. One debt agency said the final bill was estimated because meter wasn't sending readings but i submitted the actual meter reading day before I moved out!!

I am at my wits end and wonder if anyone had similar or has any advice?

Do you have all the initial/final readings from each meter change? It should be relatively straightforward to calculate an approximate amount due, and also to work out roughly what you've paid, so you can see if EON are in the right ballpark or not...

Interesting that you say it almost tripled your gas bills - was your old meter measuring in imperial units? Smart meters are always metric. Look at your bills & see if they are still billing you as imperial - there's usually a x 2.83 in the calculation if they are

    Welcome to the forum!

I have never been able to figure out whether bills are correct and no-one could give me a clear explanation.

As commented by Woodstok2000 above, meter readings are the key. Do you have readings?

meter was sent for testing, passed the test but was never re-fitted and left with temporary meter.

If the new meter was working as intended, that's one less thing to worry about.

I had a gas smart meter fitted which appeared to almost triple my gas bills.

Tripling makes me wonder if this is an imperial-to-metric swap problem.

Was your old gas meter imperial, and measured in hundreds of cubic feet? Were you being billed in imperial or in metric units?

Your new smart meter will have been metric, measuring in cubic metres. When it was swapped, were you then billed in metric units or was it still imperial?

Do you have photos of all three meters - the old, the smart and the temporary? And do you have copies of your bills?

Yes - I have the final readings. They are saying that the final bill was estimated as since Jun 25 they were estimating readings and have produced the final bill based on those. They also say the bill was 'held for review' (who knew that was a thing) and then reproduced based on actual readings. I have questioned a) still doesn't make sense as I submitted actual reading b) can't state clearly final bill when it has been held for review but with no explanation to that and c) they told me my meter was running ok - obviously not if it wasn't sending readings. I am waiting to hear back from them but I have at least been assigned a complaints handler.

If you don't mind posting the readings with dates then it should be a relatively straightforward ballpark calculation. That would at least let you know if you should be fighting the amount, or just the billing issues.

So - I have the final meter readings and some photos of readings from previous years as I have had so many issues

The bills were being produced in m3 but i do recall a conversation a while ago where it was explained to me that there was a conversion to m3 but the meter itself was in kw/h as far as I can see although you can see also a m3. I have photos of the smart and temporary but i don't seem to have one of the old - which had been there since I moved into the property in 2001.

It is all very confusing - I am a fairly intelligent person but I can't seem to get to a point where someone can explain to me in a clear way - the bills are so confusing its almost impossible to figure out.

They are showing consumption in m3 and energy used in kw/h if that makes sense.

    19th Feb 24 - 02953 kw/h (no m3 reading)

    8th July 24 - 03037 m3 (034090 kw/h but that doesn't seem right)

    13th Feb 26 - 03607 m3

I'm not sure if this is helpful at all - the photos were taken for purposes of showing eon the actual meter and what it was saying. Any manual readings I have taken over he course were written down and manually entered on website. Didnt think to take a photo - lesson learned.

First thing is I think your meter reading from 19 Feb is in m3, not kWh, otherwise you've used a hell of a lot of gas in the first 4 months, and then virtually nothing after that.

Secondly your usage does seem to be very low - I'm working it out at around 10-12 kWh per day. UK average for a small flat (1-2 people) is about 16kWh per day. Does this seem right? Do you have gas central heating and hot water, or only for cooking?

Assuming your readings are right, and with the caveat that this is entirely based on average price cap pricing and gas calorific values, the rough ballpark figures are below. How does this compare with what you paid over the period and what EON are trying to charge you for?
