TV external streaming sticks

Comes down to the individual apps, generally. Freely has a proper EPG but most others arent programmed watching so its just a list of content for you to select from.
if there is a dish you can also use FreeSat which is very similar to freeview. Some TVs have it built in

not very good for any. We have a railway that's about 20m from our house and in line with our roof which completely blocks the signal

I noticed that the box for the Chromecast seems to have all the same logos as the box shown online for the Roku (including the claim "1000+ apps". The Chromecast is far from what I want to have.
It seems as though the Freely is cheapest with the Manhattan device, but that's still £90

Is Freely a proper alternative to Freeview? Or just for catch-up? FIL has Freeview but has to use an amplifier to get the best out of it. He's not interested in a subscription service like Sky

IME yes - same programme guide, ability to scroll back in time to watch things missed, all the catch up apps etc - just reliant on internet not aerial. I have heard that the recordable Freely boxes do require an aerial signal (so no good for me) but just the players are fine. So much so that when our current V1rgin deal runs out in a year's time we're going to move to only Freely/Pleio

The TV was a budget model from nearly 5 years ago that hasnt been manufactured for at least 3 years. Its a retailer selling off old stock to clear space in the warehouse. The Aero was only launched this year and so will have suffered the manufacturing cost of the spike in the price of chips
Unfortunately there isnt a 5 year old version of the device to benefit from equally large discount given Freely itself isnt 5 years old and external devices are all less than one year old, no one has built a second generation yet for 1st gens to be sold off.
All the external devices can play the core apps like iPlayer, Netflix etc hence almost all show a similar 1,000+ type claim. Doesnt mean they all play them equally well. AppleTV is broadly seen as one of the top performers other than for iPlayer but thats because Apple doesnt support the 4k format that BBC uses and the BBC refuses to re-encode their content in an Apple supported format. I used to have a Firestick for both travel (its much smaller) and for non-UK content at home (or uk content overseas) as it allows you to install a VPN whereas AppleTV (and Roku) didnt but that changed a year or two ago so firestick is travel only now (talking about going overseas for 4 months working, not a 1 week holiday)

Correct, streamed content (which Freely is obviously based around) cannot be recorded, so the Freely-enabled PVRs like the Humax AuraEZ also have a Freeview tuner, you can only record terrestrial live TV.
Interesting (well to me) is that the official Freely site
has a long list of Freely-equipped TVs (£119 to £20k) and mentions the two streaming devices from upthread, but there is no mention at all of any Freelyed PVRs.

That's great! Quick Google and I can get him a Roku stick for £40 from Argos. He only really watches the news and Country File lol

Amazon are moving away from Android based but they still sell sticks with Android and those devices will still support it for some time to come; Android based devices won't be migrated to their new OS (which isn't doing great).

A Freesat (or a simple DVB-S2) tuner is built into lots of TVs these days so is pretty much a no brainer if you watch live TV and can't get full Freeview.
