One of the problems with those old gas fires with a back boiler was if you wanted to get double glazing installed the window company was required to get you to fit a vent on the outside wall which kind of negated the benifits of double glazing.

Before using the old gas fire at all, get it checked by a Gas Safe engineer, as older back boilers and gas fires that have sat unused can have blocked flues. And fit a battery carbon monoxide alarm in that room (they're cheap). For the first winter, a couple of oil-filled radiators plus heated throws for the evenings might bridge the gap while you decide on a proper system.
