E.ON DD Not Taken - Mark on Credit File
Hi all,
I switched form E.ON Next to Outfox Energy back in June, last week I received a text out of the blue from E.ON stating that if I didn't pay the outstanding amount on my account I would default and receive a mark on my credit file. This was the first time I'd had any correspondence from E.ON regarding an outstanding balance however I immediately logged into the E.ON app and paid the £71.12 or so with my credit card.
I have since looked back at the last correspondence I'd received from E.ON prior to this text, this was an email on the 17th of July which stated 'We will request a final Direct Debit payment of £71.12 on 3rd August 2026', however this amount was never taken.
Checking my credit score using Checkmyfile, I now have a missed payment reported to Experian, Equifax and Transunion for August, and I fear I may receive the same again for September and October.
My opinion is that it was E.ON's reasonability to take the amount they said they would, and there is no reason from my side why that direct debit would have failed. The direct debit for the regular payment still shows in my list of 'scheduled payments' on my Barclays app, so there's no way it was cancelled from my end.
What are my chances in getting E.ON to retract this missed payment report and is it likely that I will receive a mark for September and October too?
Since purchasing my first property ten years ago, I've switched energy supplier four or five times and have never encountered this issue before.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, my fiancée and I hope to move house in the next year and I'm panicking at how much this may affect our mortgage application.

It's worth a complaint to them if you are sure there was enough money in the account for the DD not to fail. Sometimes it's simply bad timing - incoming expected on a certain day is late and the outgoing DD bounces off your account instead of gliding through. Have you checked your account to see if later payments were taken?
If the DD is set up and there's money in the account then there is no good reason for e.on to not take the DD. If they do not then there is room for a major complaint. But if the payments go through ok there is no reason for them to mark your file other than as "payment made".
A couple of blips shouldn't have a long term impact on your credit history. The longer it is between the missed payment and applying for credit of any sort the more likely the credit request will be successful.

Hi Brie,
Thanks for spending your time helping me. There was plenty of money in the account at the time the DD should have been taken, and I can prove that with a bank statement.

Talk to you bank to be 100% that the DD was requested from E.ON and what reason was it declined if it was.
Then talk to e.on and give them the info and escalate it to a complaint.
Not sure how you get the marker removed but I would think the complaint may hurry things along.
Knowledgeable people will be along shortly.
