Had a similar letter from Equitini on Tuesday but concerning a small holding of Shell shares. They wanted £2 per share ! ,albeit subject to a maximum of £50 per deal. Am keeping them as the dividend income is useful.

I've had the letter too. Thanks to this thread, I've found the forms to transfer my paper held shares to SWSD with whom I already have an account.

I've sold paper held shares with equiniti beforehand, wish I knew there was a much cheaper alternative.

I think that if unsolicited e-mails were received offering to sell shares we might wonder if it was a scam. Are these letters by good old Royal Mail genuine or a very sophisticated (unsophisticated?) scam?

They are genuine. I've had them several times across the years, these companies like to have a periodic attempt to clear out small shareholders. It costs them the same to service the legal requirements for issuing information to a shareholder with 10 shares or 100,000.

which is why they should offer to offload them without a fee!

Except the company charging you the fee is not the same company that incurs the costs in sending out information to shareholders.

There have been times when small shareholders were offered free sales (usually after a takeover) so it is not unheard of.
