Gigasure travel insurance
Zero Star – Disappointing Travel Insurance Experience
My flight was cancelled because of the UK-wide air traffic control restrictions, so I could not travel and lost the money I had already paid for accommodation and activities. I submitted a claim and appealed the decision, but the insurer refused to reimburse these costs. They said air traffic control restrictions were not covered under the policy’s Cancellation section, while the Travel Delay cover only offered a fixed benefit for qualifying delays of more than 12 hours—not cancelled flights or unused bookings. I was also told that abandonment in these circumstances required optional Extended Travel Disruption cover, which I had not purchased. The wording around what is insured, not insured and restrictions on cover is very misleading. I found it extremely disappointing that the ‘supreme’ policy offered no meaningful protection for a major disruption outside my control. One star, and I would not buy this policy again, nor recommend it without extremely close scrutiny of the 87 page policy wording document.

Unfortunately, it seems you did not have cover for accommodations and activities.
That is often additional cover to a basic policy.

At the time you bought the policy, did the information available to you give the impression that you would be covered? If so, it would be worth making a complaint and if necessary taking it to the Ombudsman service. Insurance companies are not allowed to rely on putting important exclusions in the small print: they have to highlight what is and is not covered at the point of sale.

The majority of consumer insurance is written on an insured perils basis, the insurer only promises to cover a loss if the cause of the loss is on the list. If its not on the list its an uninsured risk and the insurance wont respond.
With 99%+ of people thinking the cheapest insurance is the best insurance its of little surprise that insurers are creating ever cut down policies with more coverages either being removed or moved to an optional extra, it is what the customer wants, until it gets to claim stage.
Gigasure have multiple versions of their policies and you dont state which one you bought to be able to check the wording. Having had the claim declined presumably you have actually now read the wording? If you disagree with their assessment then either post the wording and/or post a link to the version of the policy you bought for others to have a look at.
There are hundreds of reasons why someone may not travel and many of those reasons arent covered by any normal travel insurance. There is a single policy I know of in the UK which basically gives universal coverage, including you just deciding you dont want to go, but its supposed to sit alongside a regular policy as it only pays out a percentage of the travel costs lost not the whole amount.
