1W LED lights replace 50W halogen ones
I found this recently - a website selling LED replacements for those 240V 50W halogen bulbs that are very common these days.
http://www.reuk.co.uk/buy-240V-LED-SPOTLIGHT-BULB.htm
They consume just 1W so that's 98% less electricity... and they are claimed to last a lot longer too, so I've just ordered a dozen to replace all the kitchen lights...

I dont think leds are a direct replacement for halogen gu10, I was told by a electrical wholesaler that they are only good for highlighting pictures and areas of shadows
If you want low energy get the megaman range we have them to replace halogens and whilst they do give off a slight blue tinge after a few days you get use to them

B&Q now sell that range.0 -
I'll let you know what they look like when they arrive. The claim is that they are white, instead of that bluish-white that most of the LED bulbs I've seen are.0

I hope they work I would be interested. I am after a direct replacement for 4x50w GU 5.3 in the kitchen

I bought some LED GU10 'bulbs' to replace (4) halogens in the hallway. Didn't find them bright enough. So I used 2 Halogens and 2 LEDs and it's fine......0

Last year, we replaced all the 50w halogens in the house except in the hallway, where we placed a lamp containing a low energy biobulb, which we use every day rather than the 50w halogens. The leds are absolutely fine in the downstairs cloakroom, bathroom, en suite and walk in dressing room. The bathroom and en suite have a backup halogen light on top of the cabinets for when needed. The led light is certainly darker and bluer but you soon get used to it.
I have 4 of them in the kitchen but they are useless there and we will probably replace the 50w halogens back there. In the meantime, in the kitchen (large) we use 2 lamps with biobulbs and we sometimes use the undercupboard striplights and rarely the central halogen light fitting
I would say go ahead with the leds but only if you have backup lighting0 -
Just replaced 4 50w halogens for the megaman 11w versions.
The light is very bright once they have warned up but this takes a while - 20-30 seconds to be fully bright. If you need instant light in your kitchen avoid them.0 -
davetrousers just wondered how many leds did your bulbs have? I suppose the more the better0

I have a 500w floor uplighter that uses the 500w halogen lightbulb (similar to the ones in the outdoor floodlights. Is there any replacement energy saving bulb?0

ive just never seen the point to paying that sort of money for a bulb.
our kitchen takes 6 GU10 they came with 50watt which was bright 300w so i shopped around and found 20w for 60p for2 so 120w not as bright but uses half the electric.when you work out the cost of the LED bulbs and the time you use them unless your house has them everywhere i would stick with the standard ones.
the 7w megaman bulbs nearly £8 each
my 20w 30p each
energysaving £48 7watt
normal £1.80 20 watt
used an avarage of 1-2 hours a day and the energysaving using just under half of the standard power you looking at years before you make any saving and in these times you will probably have replaced your light fittings before you start to make any savings.
seems false economy to me,but if it makes you feel better0
