That makes sense about the soil vent pipe… it is indeed adjacent to the toilet so figures.

it looks like it could be metal, it’s verrry dusty. But I’m also wondering if it could be asbestos again. The original chimney flue was asbestos also and had a similar look to it.

Only the living room has both vents in the ceiling and walls, two in the ceiling and one wall vent to be exact.

All other rooms are either x1 wall or ceiling vent only.

It looks like metal ducting in the pic, as the top rim detail appears too crisp to be clay or asbestos. And if it was for handling the warmed air - far cooler that the burner exhaust - then it wouldn't require a particularly heatproof material. That's not to say it isn't surrounded by insulation, which could possibly contain asbestos, but I think it's unlikely.

Anyhoo, it serves no purpose now, so I would seal it up, and the foam+mortar method should be simple and secure.

Johnson and Stanley did make downflow boilers that sent hot air out the bottom .

Blow a bit of smoke or perfume down the hole and then sniff the vents.

Before blocking consider if it could be useful for distrbuting ethernet wiring.
