Hi, i am shopping around as you have to nowadays for a new electric supplier, as i just got a 20% raise in off-peak & a whopping 39% in normal rate. Then i came across EDF prices & there EV tariff seems ok compaired to others. Do you know if I can charge my home solar batteries up on this tariff ???

    Do you have an EV?

The Go Electric off-peak rate applies to the whole house, not just to EV charging, so you can charge solar batteries at the low off-peak rate.

But they do ask you if you have an EV when applying to switch to GoElectric.

This is right - and once we signed up I was requested to authenticate my EV with the EDF app. Not sure what would happen if you didn't take that step, maybe nothing, but equally they might bump you onto a different tariff.

That's interesting. They must be tightening up on eligibility.

There was no authentication request when I originally switched earlier this year. In fact at the time we didn't have an EV. I called them to ask if I could still switch to GoElectric without an EV and the answer was yes.
We now have an EV so I'm not to concerned.

What was the process for authentication? Did you have to enter any registration number details or scan a V5?

One point to add on the battery side, because it affects whether the saving is real:

If the off-peak rate applies to the whole house, a home battery can be timed to charge in that cheap window - but check the round-trip losses before relying on the headline rate. Storing electricity and using it later typically loses around 10-15%, so the effective cost of each kWh you take back out of the battery is higher than the off-peak price you paid for it.

It is also worth getting the eligibility position confirmed in writing before you switch. If the tariff requires an EV to be authenticated and that step is not completed, you need to know what rate you would be moved to instead, as that could wipe out the saving. Finally, compare the whole bill - the higher day rate and standing charge on everything else you use may outweigh the benefit if most of your charging is for the battery rather than the car.

From what I remember it was just connecting to the VW app through the EDF app, and then they were linked. I'm not sure if it was a key account authentication, or just a required step before I could charge.

Switched to this tariff last week. On sign-up stated that I had a ‘Generic’ (granny) charger and provided make/model of my hybrid EV and approximate annual mileage.

No requirement to verify in the App (not even an option for this that I can see).

Switched to EDF (SVR) on Monday… meter connected Tuesday and Go tariff became effective that day.

Happily charging both my car and Anker battery overnight, bonus is that the immersion tank is about 25% cheaper to heat than gas at the 6.66ppKWh rate so now using electric for hot water.

Yes, we are using GoElectric off-peak to heat our water as well.

No gas, but we are on oil for our heating which is now at £1.10 per litre.
That equates to around 10.6p per kWh before any boiler inefficiency losses 😢

Hopefully as/when/if things return to some semblance of normality in the Middle East, the price will eventually fall back to the previous £0.60 a litre level. I'm just hoping we have enough oil in our tank to see us through winter.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I noticed EDF want me to sign up on their fixed tarif & then change me over to the EV tariff. Sounds a bit dodgy. I haven't got a car yet, but I have got 2x300A 48v battery banks. 😉 Might have to get a very cheap electric car to prove i have one. Wonder if they will accept an electric right off or mot fails, as there are a few about at £250.

When I signed up 2 weeks back there was no requirement to pair the car.

If you do.pair the car for smart charging though, they credit you £5 month back so well worth doing if you car or charger is supported.

I tend to charge one a week at the moment with working from home so plug in on Sunday and typically it charges until about 5PM putting my Sunday dinner cooking costs to off peak.
