British Gas faulty Gas Meter

Before going to the Ombudsman, make sure you have all your facts together and can make a case for how much you think you were overcharged by. Base it on your annual gas use (in kWh) before the meter went faulty.
I wonder if that is a bit easier said than done? You know that the meter was faulty for a while before it was replaced but not exactly when the fault started. If you did a month-by-month comparison between 2026 and 2025 you might be able to spot when the readings became unexpectedly high. And make sure you also give the Ombudsman (and BG Complaints) readings from after the meter was replaced as evidence for the difference that that made.
It's very unlikely that any supplier would advise a customer about specific issues with a particular type of meter but they might have encouraged you to get your old meters replaced with smart meters. If you had been putting off getting a smart meter until this July, then BG might argue that they had already asked you to replace your old gas meter but you hadn't responded.

As stated above, that's the same meter i had an issue with. And, I'm not the only one. This from 2014:

Notice that C in the display? That's an error code. I was never able to find a reliable source of what it means (mine varied from b, d, C and E), but if you have more older photos, that might give an indication for when the issue started. I used that argument in my fight with EDF and the Energy Ombudsman.
