Norwegian Pension after death
I'm after some advice, if possible, my father passed away in June 2024 in the UK and he had a Norwegian pension from when he worked there 40+ years ago. I've contacted the company over the phone and sent his death cert, however they don't accept ours as certified copies as they have different policies. Any advice on what I can do please?

what do they want?

Seems you may need to get the original UK death certificate 'apostilled', for it to be accepted by a pension provider in a foreign country - see explanations below and fees involved if handled direct by the government or via a third party service provider -
You can be forgiven for not knowing of this requirement, most people are unaware that a 'naked' UK death certificate is not sufficient for most foreign reporting purposes of a UK death.

They have a policy in their country that the doctor contacts all companies to advise of the death, so they said they need something like that. It was in broken English and I dont speak Norweigian.

Normally with these things its better to get an email or something similar that you can run through one or more translation tools
So they want a doctors letter, did they say what it should contain?Their former GP should be able to do it, thought likely a chargable service, DPA/GDPR only applies to living persons so there shouldnt be the issues of not being the patient. Presumably they will want his name address, date of birth and then the date of death with the thing on headed paper and probably worth adding the practice stamp if they have one

It could be worth phoning again and hoping you get someone with easier to understand English, or try communicating by email.
The question is, what are they going to do while they wait for their requirements to be met - keep paying his pension? Surely not … Is it that you think you might be entitled to something?

ok a quick google… so normally the GP notifies the Folkeregisteret (population register) of the death and then pension companies etc pick it up from there.
Was he still a norwegian citizen? Assuming so then you can go through the population register but may need an apostille on the death certificate

That may well suffice for Norwegian residents and their local doctors , can't see how that can possibly extend to foreign doctors whose credentials/authority cannot be easily/reliably checked by a Norwegian corporate entity.
An apostilled death cert must be the only reliable and acceptable way to progress this matter.
However, surely the company ceased paying the pension when you informed them of the death and you informed them of the fact in a timely matter? Hate to think they have been paying the pension since 2024.

Have you tried asking the Norwegian Embassy for advice?
