school shoes falling apart, no receipt, paid cash
i bought school shoes from Matalan on 31st August- I noticed today that the sole of each shoes is becoming detached - same place on each shoe, the outer side.
There is no other damage such as scuffs, or anything to suggest theyve been used for anything apart from worn on a typical school day.
BUT… I dont have the receipt ( got one on purchase but i binned it once we had checked they fitted OK). I have the bank transaction on my bank statement but as I bought a few more things from there, its not just the price of the shoes on the transaction.
I need to take these back today, as school wont allow the child to wear his trainers for more than today.
They have the Matalan label in them so theyre definately from there but what are the chances of an exhangeor refund?

We've returned things to Matalan in the past with no receipt - only ever for an exchange, not a refund, but they were very accommodating.

A receipt (or similar proof of purchase) is desirable but not essential - particularly where you have other evidence of proof of purchase.
This item has failed in normal wear within a very short period of ownership and is demonstrably not fit for purpose. You are entitled to a full refund.
You should return the shoes to the shop where purchased (if possible) and ask for a refund. If you're happy with an exchange then you should accept this. If the shop disputes this you should have your alternative evidence available to demonstrate the date/purchase details.

They should accept the bank statement as proof of purchase - on balance of probabilities.

We have too.

Thanks for your replies, I returned the shoes, the store ddnt have a replacement available so I asked for a refund which they processed swiftly.

This is a good outcome.
I'd be happy to continue to shop at a store that behaves in this way.

Sounds like a good outcome. I once returned a clothes drying rack to a lidl without a receipt because it broke - the manager managed to track down the purchase in their records using my card number and transaction date and print out a receipt for me - not sure how standard that is.
