Any thoughts on what could be causing itch and irritation at home
Found the answer. It is bedbugs. I had convinced myself it wasn't. But I was wrong.

Have you tried staying away from home overnight?

Utmost sympathies, worst 18 months of our lives trying to get these eradicated after youngest brought them home from a school trip. Despite two kids being sent home due to bites and reactions to them, school waited 3 days to tell us to unpack outside etc, which obviously was far too late.
I'm sure you know this OP but don't even try and treat yourselves, just get the pest control in, ours was a neighbouring council who did it for £300 and came 3/4 times to ensure it was all got rid of. And you'll need to treat that sofa if not get rid sadly (ours was successfully treated but the beds were too far gone).
Honestly - huge commiserations, we've had mice, rats and bedbugs and the latter by far the worst:eek::eek::eek: LBM 11/05/2010 - WE DID IT - DMP of £62000 paid off in 7 years:jDFD April20171 -
Thanks for your post.
I had bedbugs once before, 12 years ago, and on that occasion I am pretty sure I picked them up from a cruise ship. I got an expert from London to come who eradicated them, though it took two visits but the treatment is guaranteed for six months. I have contacted the same person again and he will come and do the business. It is going to be more like £500 than £300 but I don't care. I just want rid of them.
On this occasion I suspect I picked them up from a stay at a hotel which is part of a very well known chain, as three months after I stayed there another guest posted online that he had been bitten whilst staying in the same hotel.0 -
They often hide in luggage, so I guess hotels must be always vulnerable.

Yes, and hotels - even some of the bigger ones - make up most of the client base of the expert I am employing.
I do take as much care as I can to avoid them. Usually on arrival in a hotel room or suite I will put my luggage into the bathroom whilst I carefully inspect the bed, and when I have unpacked I place any cases as high off the ground as I can (and never on the floor) as bedbugs are not great climbers.1 -
On the other hand, when I was working I stayed in more hotels than I care to think about. Many of them not that nice, but never had a problem with bed bugs.
