Cosy Octopus v Octopus fixed rate

My Cosy Octopus fixed is about to expire. I have calculated how many Kwh I used for each tariff over the last 12 months and I have applied the new Cosy rates for Yorkshire to these usage totals. These calculations suggest that using Cosy would be marginally more expensive than a 12 month fixed tariff. We are careful to get the most out of Cosy, using the cheap period for washing and dishwashing and avoiding usage during the expensive period. So around 2000 kWh cheap, 1700 daytime and 300 expensive over the year.

When I talked to Octopus help about this they emphasised that Cosy had been cheaper for us and insisted it would go on being cheaper but didn't find fault with my methods of calculation.

Has anybody tried to work out future costs and got the same results please?

Welcome to the forum! Here's how it works out in my region (Southern) on current tariffs:

    Cosy 12m fix Sep 26 v2: 15.29p/kWh Cosy rate, 31.19p/kWh day rate, 46.78p/kWh peak rate, SC 49.85p/day.

    Cosy cost for one year: 2000 x 0.1529 + 1700 x 0.3119 + 300 x 0.4678 + 365 x 0.4985 = £1158.32

    Single-rate 12m fix Sep 26 v2: 28.59p/kWh, SC 46.41p/day.

    Fix cost for one year: 4000 x 0.2859 + 365 x 0.4641 = £1313.00

So in my region, Cosy would be £165/yr cheaper.

  • Thank you for the prompt response. I rechecked my workings and Cosy is £54 cheaper in Yorkshire.

My Cosy lasts till March next year but if I was to change now..

    Fixed rates for me for Cosy are 16.7p / 34p / 51p

As an alternative basic fixed rate 28p or E7 version 14.7p / 34.7p.

I think I would go for the E7 version - no peak penalty and cheapest rate is cheaper.

But would also consider switching away from Ocotpus - although not sure where, the EDF heat punp tracker sounds good in theory - no peak prices - just cap price (now 27p) and 4-7 & 13-16 10p cheaper so 17p, but as its tracker in January when prices will go up by 20% it will be 33p and 23p.. so not so great, but they also have FreePhase Static (fixed for 24 months) with 15p night rate, 23p day rate and 43p peak rate - so would consider it - espeicacially when EDF has recommend a friend bonus of £75 - if you know someone.

    Tough one :)
