    As the relative is 86, she must be getting DLA, or the Scottish equivalent. PIP was introduced in 2013 and the relative will already have been in her 70s at that point.

    As has been posted, it might be worth checking what components of DLA she receives. As she may have a high level of disability, it may be that she already gets the care component of DLA alongside entitlement to the mobility component

    is there an easy(ish) way of find out what her current pension status is i.e if she is only getting the basic single person

    Your relative should have a letter (received around mid March) showing her state pension entitlement for the new tax year.

    When informed of her husband's death, the DWP should have reviewed her situation. Has she had a letter concerning this matter?
