If you get an EV tariff, you'll have cheap home overnight charging too, which will be perfect to charge up your storage heaters.

Most of the stonking EV tariffs (2.8p/kWh overnight for the last year!) have gone but it was good whilst it lasted. We've saved enough over the last three years to pay for the car!

We switched to a straight 20p / kWh fixed tariff (the day before it went to 24p) as we're at home all day. EDF could offer a marginal saving at 7p/31p but the flexibility of up to 40% cheaper day rates is attractive.

Stick everything into a spreadsheet with your previous usage and see where it goes…

I don't use satnav any more. I find that Google maps linked to the cars infotainment system displays nearby charging facilities, and whether they are slow or fast. I have found Google to be superior to any satnav I have used.

I can't afford to heat my home with the current storage heaters so use an oil filled radiator in a small sun room in the winter. I did try changing to a two rate tariff last winter but decided I was paying a lot of money for having my storage heaters on, well actually just heating my normal lounge, so switched back.

This probably deserves a thread on the Energy forum (you might even have one already that you could rejuvenate). Depending on exactly how much electricity you're using, and for what, returning to a dual-rate EV tariff has the potential to save you some money.

If you're using 10kWh a day on your oil-filled heater plus 3kWh a day for everything else (13 kWh total) it's going to be costing about £3.25 a day in electricity on the current flat-rate tariff of 25p/kWh. If you then add 5kWh a day for EV charging (15-20 miles a day) that's another £1.25, total £5 a day.

On a good EV tariff the night rate is around 7p/kWh and the day rate is 35p/kWh. So with the oil-filled heater but no EV you'd be looking at £4.55, plus 35p for the EV so a total of £4.80 a day. So that's a little cheaper than on the single-rate tariff.

But if you gave up the oil-filled heater and instead put 20kWh/day (twice as much heat!) into your storage heater(s) on the cheap rate, it would be £2.45 a day without the EV and £2.80 a day with the EV. £2 a day cheaper than using the oil-filled heater, and getting on for half the price of the single-rate tariff.

Edit: I see you got the ECO4 grant in 2024. Does this mean your storage heaters are modern High Heat Retention ones?

I don't think the current IOG tariff is quite that generous. Here's what https://octopus.energy/tariffs shows for my region:

There's a variable version, but it's more expensive again.

Now given the warning on next quarter rises. To fix or not to fix?

Sadly the VAT drop has gone down the black hole… Not to get political, but give with one hand & then kick you in the teeth & take everything else.

    Zapmap

It allows good filtering as well ( for example, only show chargers of more than 100KW )
