I specifically asked if the new fix could start from the end of the old fix and was told no.

That might be what you were told, but it's not actually correct.

The only way to do that was to wait and request the new fix at the end of September thereby risking an increase in the tariff.

My experience earlier this year was that if you chose your new tariff via the app (or presumably website), your new taiff starts on the day the old one ends. And you get a countdown to that date in the app (or website).

Edit: here is my post from that time.

I phoned on 18th September and asked Octopus to switch me to Cosy Fixed (was Jun26 version then) when my current Cosy Fixed ends on 1st October and the agent said this was fine and said it had been noted on my account.

Nothing showing online confirming this but it better happen as 2 newer versions have been released since with higher unit costs and exit fees.

This is all a bit hypothetical …

Any current offer will state whether the rates change on 1 October, for example as a result of zero-rating VAT. The levies that were removed (one wholly, the other in part) are not likely to come back next April, but there are others that have either already been applied or can be expected to apply at some future date. Suppliers no longer have to pay the levies to the Treasury, so any current tariff won't include them. That said, suppliers can charge what they like except for customers on their Standard Variable Tariff, where unit rates and standing charges are capped.

I'm not being lazy ... I'm just in energy-saving mode.
