Smart meter engineer requested WiFi password

During installation of smart meters, the engineer asked for our WiFi password. Why this needed for Smart meter set up?

It's not required for the smart meter itself. Maybe they needed to connect their laptop to the internet and their mobile signal was poor?

Only the engineer could have answered that for certain.

The smart meter engineer asked for my password last month for his phone (we are in a poor mobile signal reception area) - he gave me his phone and I typed it in for him. I judged the risk to my cyber security to be minimal.

It isn't uncommon for them to ask so they get a better signal for their laptop.

I had one who did and one who didn't.

The engineer who installed my smart meter had to phone "the office" as part of the installation process and had to step outside in order to get a signal.

If that is ever requested, always enable guest wifi mode on your router or create a wifi hot spot of your phone and then you can switch it off after they have gone without having to reset your main wifi password.

If You are concerned about this in future, look into setting up Guest access on your WiFi. Our provider offers this through the app, it generates a different password to your network, and also access via qr code. Any issues and you can turn it off or change the password.

Some IHD's can connect to Wi-Fi networks. My supplier gave me an IHD7, which is capable of connecting to my Wi-Fi network - as I don't see why not, I've currently had it connected to my network for some months now.
