Best stain blocker paint

Hi

Have brown stain on ceiling from a leak. Have painted over it still shows. Whats best stain blocker on a budget to buy that works as are so expensive.

I just went to my local store and bought a spray stain blocker paint which did the job (it was a very small area). More expensive brands include zinsser, which are highly regarded.

Defo what you need, it's pretty quick drying too. The water based stain stop from a brand that claims it does exactly what it says on the tin requires multiple coats to block a stain, this stuff does it in 1 normally, 2 in extreme cases.

A very thin coat of gloss and then go over it with emulsion works every time

Do you mean oil/solvent-based gloss? AFAIK nowadays some, if not many, gloss paints are emulsions.

Yes I mean gloss that you do your skirtings etc with and once the thin coat has dried go over it with emulsion paint (matte or silk). You should be able to buy a small pot.

Zinsser Cover Stain is less than £10 and will cover the stain (as it says on the tin). If you have some of the original paint that was used on the ceiling then paint that over the top but don’t expect a perfect match. The existing paint will have changed slightly with exposure to light so blend it in carefully at the edges.

I've had a look and can't see it in the cupboard, so I can't remember sorry. But as others have said, if you can stretch to zinsser that would do very well

There's quite a few on the market. Most of the pros use Zinsser, but there's cheaper spray cans like Rustins.

Zinsser also do a spray version of BIN which is smaller, and cheaper, than the usual tin. I've only used the tins of BIN and think it's great. Make sure to ventilate the room well when using it, as it has a strong smell.
