Fixed rates for British gas

hi I don’t know if anyone can help here but I was wondering do British Gas haggle? My dad is 94 and I’ve been trying to help him get a reasonable fixed rate deal for gas and electric. Similarly I have a husband who has leukaemia and wondered again if there is any such help they could give on a fixed rate cost? (Neither Dad or hubby are on any benefits). I’ve been trying to find a phone number for British Gas but can’t seem to find any contact numbers at l and the chat never seems to be working. Thanks kindly.

Some on here might think you mistyped hassle and got haggle, but the best option is to use one of the comparison sites e.g.. the MSE cheap energy club, or Uswitch. All you need to know is what the annual consumption is for the two gentlemen , in kWh for gas and electric. Then away you go. You can always come on here for further advice , the folks here are usually very helpful.

    Welcome to the forum!

Can you haggle with British Gas? Basically, no. You can see what offers there are on comparison sites, such as the MSE Cheap Energy Club, although others are available. 😉

Why British Gas though? Is that the existing supplier and they're reluctant to switch? Unless the contract is in your name, or you have specific permission to talk on behalf of the named person, you are going to find it difficult to have a useful conversation with BG, or any other supplier for that matter.

BG don't have the best customer service reputation, but this is the contact number they provide:

You can absolutely extract a bribe from British Gas for staying with them. I have done so the last few years. This assumes that you've looked at other companies and have found a better deal somewhere else than what BG are currently offering you.

I've initiated a switch before and got a call from BG retentions less than 24h later, managed to get them to give me slightly more than what I would have saved switching.

When I got towards the end of my fixed tariff back in April, I didn't even bother starting a switch. I called BG and asked if they'd be willing to credit the £100 difference between their best offer and the cheapest I could find somewhere else. Got the credit without too much trouble.

It's definitely worth a few minutes on the phone. Worst case they don't want to and you just switch to whatever else you've found that's cheaper.

I know BG have a terrible reputation for CS but I've not had any problems. Also they waive the exit fees on a fixed tariff if you change to another of their fixed tariffs

British Gas operate a vulnerable user scheme which is free to join. If you are dual fuel BG offer a pretty good tariff.

If I were you I would sign on the vulnerable user scheme.

You should then ask about getting smart meters. This is your bargaining tool. British Gas are keen to get as many smart meters fitted as possible do use this and your vulnerabilities to negotiate a deal. You can have dual gas and electric metering in the one display unit.

The smart meter unlocks the best British Gas tariffs. The BG app is pretty good at monitoring your energy use and its free from Google play.

The BG smart meter involves an engineer having to visit... another good opportunity to see what BG can offer from a face to face.

I have had zero issues with the smart meter device. These are completely passive devices which cannot be used to disconnect you, Sorry tin foil hatters.

British Gas have been pretty good. Better than EoN that's for sure.

If you don't ask you don't get so it's well worth asking British Gas for a deal.... your willingness to have the smart meter is a good negotiating start.
