Misled by Car Pound - Do I have a case?

Hi everyone, I have a situation I'm unsure about. I was parking on a road that constantly had the parking signs removed. This was in Tower Hamlets and I've since moved.

I accumulated around ten parking tickets and eventually my car was impounded. When I went to the pound, I recorded myself. The employee told me that if I surrendered the car, all my PCNs would be removed as they're attached to the car and I'd be free from the tickets. This was months ago.

I found out recently that all the PCNs are still there and have been escalating, I haven't received communications about these in the post as they have an old address. I emailed them and they said that the sale of the car would only contribute to one PCN and the impound fee.

Am I right in feeling misled at the pound into surrendering my car? Can I do anything about it?

My failure to respond to the tickets and for contravening parking rules are on me, but I have a 2.5k bill now that I was told was settled.

This seems to be council-related. As we major on private parking tickets here, Free Traffic Legal Advice (FTLA) forum will be your best bet for council penalty charges, and similar. Read the sticky 'Read this first before posting your case' as well as reading through some of the other threads there ahead of posting your own details, to get the hang of what information they need from you in your opening post - but as a minimum you will need to post redacted photos/scans of all correspondence you've received from the council (both sides, if appropriate), as they need to see all the small print, and a Google Street View link.

What did you get in writing, such as a receipt and valuation of your vehicle?

If your V5 has the incorrect address that could be another issue coming your way.

Sounds a right mess on both sides.

Yes, definitely a mess. The V5 did have my previous address so that did cause an issue. I surrendered the car so haven't updated it.

I didn't receive anything at the impound, but I had to sign the surrender which I recorded with my phone.

I'd certainly be checking the status with the DVLA to see if it is taxed and using the V5C details check the registered keeper.

If that keeper is you, then you are responsible for tax, SORN, scrapping or registering transfer of keeper.

You'd better be checking there are no further outstanding tickets etc too.

I checked and the DVLA wasn't aware, so I'm sending a letter tomorrow.
