Yes cars are part of the general description of chattles in England, even where they are of an intrinsically investment nature such as an Aston Martin DB5 or Ferrari 250 GTO.

They are as much a 'chattle' as the Ford Fiesta despite their multi million price tags.

AIUI, she can not actually leave you her half of the house in her will, as when she dies you will automatically own 100% of it anyway.

True given the current circumstances, but this future-proofs the will should they ever buy a house and it gets registered as tenants in common. Currently any 'leave my portion of house to husband' clause would simply fail and you simply go onto the next bit of the will, but if they did own it as tenants in common then the clause would very much get activated and save the husband from potentially losing half the house.
